Job Description

Fundamentally important to the success of Majestic Wine achieving some exciting future growth plans, the Head of Promotional Planning is responsible for implementing our customer centric promotional strategy.  

Reporting directly into the trading director this role is multifaceted role with multiple touch points both internally including buying, the customer team, supply chain, retail and merchandising.

Key Responsibilities

As Majestic look to innovate and shift our promotional messages and product range to drive value, the head of planning will build a plan that:

  • Delivers an increase in footfall we need across our stores and website
  • Create a more loyal customer base with high levels of engagement
  • Promotes our strategic objective of supporting sales of exclusive products and brands


  1. Output: we build a plan that is strong enough to deliver both our immediate and long term objectives and targets
  2. Process: ensure that the right communication, collaboration and planning is being delivered cross-functionally to execute the plan
  3. Reporting: ensure budgeting and targeting reflect the promotional plan, and that performance is properly measured and reported, and learnings are captured and acted upon

What are we looking for?

  • Analytical and results-focused: continuous improvement of the promotional plan requires understanding the outputs of activity, and you’ll need to be comfortable working with data and how to apply it to decision-making
  • Commercial: you’ll need to understand the company’s KPIs and our focus on growth, and always be able to relate the plan back to the strategic and commercial objectives.
  • Communication: this role sits at the centre of a planning process involving multiple stakeholders, so you must be able to communicate articulately and effectively – clear actions and instructions, spreadsheets everyone can understand,
  • Influencing: in running the planning process you’ll need to make sure works get done to schedule, which requires the gravitas and ability to influence and maintain productive relationships with colleagues up to Head of Department and Director level.
  • Process-driven: promotional planning is like project management where the project never ends; you’ll need to understand how a well thought out and disciplined process can improve everyone’s productivity.
  • Wine: A basic understanding of the UK wine market is essential - WSET level 2 is preferable. In particular the different geographies, grape varietals and styles which influence customer purchasing decisions.
  • Proactive: you’ll always be looking for ways to improve, and unafraid to highlight issues where they are material.
  • Attention to detail: you’ll ensure that nothing is overlooked and that every detail is double checked as a matter of routine diligence
